Invasive Species Control

Invasive species damage the environment & destroy habitat, not herbicides. Habitat rebounds when invasive species are removed.  We give cultural methods preference over herbicide applications whenever possible. However, some species cannot be controlled without herbicide. We always study the life cycle of each plant we aim to control to know when it is most vulnerable. Our goal is to always get your project to a condition where herbicide is not needed.

Ecosystem Restoration

Pizzo Indigo Bunting - Niles, MI Project

Restoring natural systems requires thoughtful & scientifically based planning, implementation, & management. A site can be remnant or re-constructed. Remnants are part of the once vast green carpet that covered the land. Re-constructed sites have had significant disturbance. Remnant sites respond quickly to restoration. Re-constructed sites require more efforts at the beginning but yield results in a few years.

Prescribed Fire

North American ecosystems are not fire tolerant they are fire dependent. To replicate this historic process, we utilize fire as a stewardship tool. Prescribed fire is not a magic wand.  Fire is best described as a spring/fall cleanup. It removes the debris & lets the sunshine in. It also allows us to access the bad plants earlier & easier.

Shoreline Erosion Control

We help you avoid and repair erosion by installing new shorelines & slopes with native perennials that are beautiful & functional. We’ll take care of permitting, regrading, installation of a custom mix of native perennials, & steward to establish a stable shoreline or slope.

Brush Clearing

Impenetrable thickets of brush are common, many of the trees & shrubs are thorny. These thickets are typically comprised of invasive species. They are so dense that it suppresses or eliminates the diverse native species. Brush removal reduces the humidity by allowing wind to dry the area. It also helps create optimal conditions for prescribed fire. Burning maintains the dry air flow. Mosquitos don’t like dry air. Brush clearing is mosquito control!
