Fall and winter are the perfect time to attack invasive woody species by brush clearing. Once desirable native woodland plants have gone dormant, it’s time to go in and remove woody shrubs and trees.
When we perform brush clearing we target invasive shrubs such as barberry, buckthorn and honeysuckle. These shrubs leaf out early and hold their leaves longer, preventing sun and water from reaching the forest loam. Once the stems have been cut back, it is necessary to treat the fresh stumps to prevent resprouting. Sometimes removal on nonnative trees such ornamental pear, is necessary. Pizzo Native Plant Nursery is delighted to announce that Mandy Leifheit has joined the team as Sales Assistant. With a degree in landscape design from Kishwaukee College, Mandy has been an active participant in the green industry for the past 13 years. She has served in various roles at Suburban Lawn, Midwest Groundcovers and most recently as a landscape designer at Grant and Power Landscaping.
